Washington DC Chiropractor Talks About Sitting Too Much
Do you sit in a car on the way to work? Sit all day at a desk? Sit in the car on the way home and then sit all evening watching television? If so, your back may soon be complaining. What can you do about it?
Why is sitting too much a big deal?
When you sit you put almost twice the stress on your spine as you would if you were standing and if you hunch forward as well, you could be on the road to developing a straight spine that over time removes your natural spinal curves.
Here are 4 of the possible outcomes of sitting too much that may be corrected by your Washington DC chiropractor:
1. Your hip flexors shorten
It’s a painfully simple equation: the more you sit, the more your hip flexors will shorten. Your muscles will no longer stretch and you will likely not stand as straight and tall as is possible.
2. Your pelvis tilts forward
Your gluteus maximus (or more commonly your butt) is the largest muscle group in your body. When your glutes stop working properly your pelvis tilts to compensate.
3. Your hips don’t balance
If you sit and you’re a leg crosser, it can affect the stability of your lower body. Instability in the lower body can diminish your athletic ability and range of motion. It can also bother you if you just need to climb out of the couch.
4. You suffer from chronic neck and shoulder pain
Shoulders forward, head leaning in toward the computer screen, sound familiar? Your abdominal muscles and whole core may be having a difficult time supporting you and could lead to debilitating neck and shoulder pain.
Steps to take if you sit too much
There are many things you can do to avoid the problems that arise from sitting too much. Studies show it’s not necessarily how much time you spend sitting, but how much time you spend moving.
If you do sit a lot at work, try these 4 tips to avoid doing it too much:
- Stand up to take phone calls (keeps you alert and changes your posture)
- Take the stairs instead of the elevators (some cardio always helps)
- Stand up during your coffee breaks (you may even meet someone new and interesting)
- Get up and get moving for at least 10 minutes every hour
